The first step in cleaning suede is to brush it well with a suede brush. It cleans out any dirt and dust that collects in the suede and also works to raise the nap which brings out color too. Then you decide if your item needs to be shampooed or not.
It is always a good idea at the beginning of the season to waterproof the suede. It protects from the rain, salt stains and also food stains.

There have been some changes in the industry lately. We have been made aware that the SC Johnson Company will no longer be making the Meltonian Shoe Cream. That has been a staple on this website and in our shoe repair shop for over 35 years.
In trying to find a shoe cream similar we have decided to offer the Kelly’s Shoe Cream made by the Fiebings Co., which has been making shoe and leather care products since, 1895. We already carry some of their products such as their Heel and Sole Dressing and their Saddle Soap.
The Shoe Cream polish has a similar texture to the Meltonian and comes in many of the same colors. Hope you will give it a try and we love to hear from you so please let us know what you think.
We are always happy to hear from our customers especially when they have had great success with one of our products. This customer was so pleased she said I could share them on my blog. I appreciate her doing this.
She was using the Tarrago Self-Shine Color Dye to rescue an old ottoman and this was her email:
I just want to let you know that I was absolutely astonished how well the
dye worked for us. I’ve attached pictures of our leather ottoman that we
have had for 20 years. The colors of a couple of the pictures are off color
a little, but they are the same piece. You can see how many scratches were
from wear and tear. We almost sold the furniture but first we wanted to see
if we could find a color dye that would work. We chose #33 and it was a
perfect match. We are now keeping the furniture and I will certainly
recommend your product! Feel free to use any photos to show a “before” and

There were two versions of the shine butler back in 1907. That is the date on the photo: Aug. 3 1907. The one on the right is not longer made but was available up until a couple of years ago. The one on the left looks exactly like the shine butler that we still carry on our website today.
Shoes can be stretched for increased comfort. A shoe repair shop can do this for you or you can do it yourself.
The Shoe Shine Kit sells stretchers for men’s shoes, women’s shoe and women’s high heel shoes.
The direction for using a shoe stretcher are simple:
Wet down shoes inside and out with the Shoe Stretch Solution. On cloth or suede shoes you might test solution on inconspicuous area to make sure it doesn’t stain the material. Decide whether you need to use the bunion pods and either remove them or move them to the appropriate location on the stretcher. Insert stretcher as far as possible into the shoe. Start to crank the stretcher open, continue turning until pressure appears on the upper. DO NOT OVERSTRETCH. For best results leave on overnight. If necessary repeat the process.
One shoe stretcher is all you need, you can use the same one for the left or right foot. You can also purchase shoe trees to be inserted in your shoes while storing to keep their shape.
